Police take evidence from Kerr’s home

GREENWICH – Police in Greenwich are currently at the former home of Jaliek Rainwalker’s adoptive parents.

The 12-year-old boy was been missing since Nov. 1. His father, Stephen Kerr, has been named a person of interest in the case.

Police Chief George Bell says new information gathered this week led to a search warrant for the residence on Hill Street. Officers spent about four hours there and took evidence out of the home.

Bell would not comment on what the new information is or what eveidence they gathered in the home.

Kerr says he’s evaluating the legality of the search.  He says police did not have a search warrant when they first arrived.

Kerr and his wife, Jocelyn McDonald, moved late last week from Greenwich to West Rupert, Vermont.

Earlier today state police divers were in Troy searching for the boy in the Hudson River near the Hoosick Street Bridge. Two state police boats combed river using sonar equipment searching for any possible sign of Jaliek.

Jaliek’s grandmother, Barbara Reeley, watched the search from the shore. It’s hard, she says, because she lives close by and her husband works just a couple blocks away.

“It’s difficult to think that we would have come and gone back and forth to work, to home each day. If Jaliek is found here, I mean, I don’t think that anything could be more heartbreaking than finding him not alive, but also that we could have come and gone for months not knowing,” Reeley said.

Bell says they were looking there because he believes Kerr is lying about the car ride he and Jaliek took the day the boy disappeared.

According to the chief, Kerr says he picked up Jaliek from a couple watching the boy at a hotel on Western Avenue in Albany. They went to the Red Robin in Latham and then got on alternate Route 7, crossed the Hoosick Street Bridge and moved on to Greenwich.

Bell says he thinks there was more to that trip. They’re focusing on the Hoosick Street Bridge, but won’t say why.

Troy police were on scene to assist, keeping in mind they may need to do more.

“If in fact Jaliek’s body is discovered in the river and it is determined that harm came to him at this specific location, this becomes a city of Troy homicide,” Troy Police Capt. John Cooney said.

Bell says the divers did not find anything in the water on Thursday.  There is no word yet if the search there will resume on Friday.

  1. “Kerr says he’s evaluating the legality of the search”, that sums it up right there, this guy has been playing the blame game since day one. Always looking to point the finger at someone. “They didn’t have a warrant when they first got here”. He’s trying to make himself the victim. Remember in the initial news interview at their home, he says “YOU failed Jaliek”, referring to NYS residents. “The state failed Jaliek”, referring to the foster care system. “We took him in when no one else would”. Going on and on about MLK and such. Kerr is without a doubt mentally unstable. It seems as if he has some sort of superiority complex, and I bet the kids feed his ego. If the situation didn’t involve a missing 12 y/o, I’d call Stephen Kerr laughable at best.

  2. Has anyone else wondered about Kerr’s parents (his father at least) who owns the house on HIll St.? Do they play any role in this since they own the house? Couldn’t they have approved a search of the house a long time ago? I think I remember reading that the father is somehow affiliated with the US Embassy in Romania, or the Romanian Embassy in the US, or is an envoy…something like that. Anyway, with Barbara Reeley being so vocal and wanting to help find Jaliek it makes me wonder about Kerr’s relationship with his parent’s/family.

  3. Yes I have wondered about Kerr’s relationships with his family….the whole case is totally bizarre….and what about McDonald herself?…I find it hard to believe she is not fully aware of what has happened. What about the other children?….Just found out Kerr has moved the family to Vermont. Are the kids with them or have they been placed in foster care?….So many questions….so few answers ….at least for now.The clock is ticking…..

  4. There’s no way McDonald doesn’t know everything…if she doesn’t it’s because she doesn’t want to.
Are any of their kids still foster children or have they been adopted? If any are foster(s) can the family legally move out of NYS with them?

  5. Good Morning Everyone! I’m barely awake here and you guys have all sorts of thoughts going on. LOL

TheBugHouse, Isn’t Kerr the victim here? I joke! He has been playing that card from the beginning but it’s wearing thin these days. The police arrived at the house on Hill St. and found Kerr and McDonald there. They told Kerr that they would have to leave because they were going to be doing a search. The warrant was on it’s way and to my knowledge the police didn’t start anything until the warrant arrived. Kerr didn’t like the fact that LE was there for that brief period of time when the warrant was in transit. Good luck to you Kerr in fighting this one, I don’t think you have a leg to stand on legally. IMO JMO Bug, I think you’re right, he’s mentally unstable. Add to that arrogant and I’m pretty sure a sociopath.

Megan, you raise some good points. Where the hell is his family in all of this? You are correct, his father Graham Kerr is a United States Diplomat to Romania. There have been quotes from him back when Jaliek first went missing but I haven’t heard boo from him since. Why wasn’t he at his house when LE arrived. Kerr, McDonald and their children moved to VT last week so why were they even there? I’m not sure what the relationship is there but Kerr’s parents, or father I should say, don’t seem to care much. I guess it’s a family trait. IMO In answer to your question on the children, they have 3 biological and 2 adopted, Jaliek was one of the adopted and there’s also a girl who was adopted. The question now is who will be paying for the services that the adopted children need (and aren’t getting), NY or VT? Yes, they are still receiving $1500/mo for Jaliek even though he is obviously not in their care.

Karen, I don’t know about McDonald. Did you see the interview that News Channel 10 did with the both of them? She seemed as if she was standing by her man, almost seemed as if she was brainwashed to believe every word he said. IMO If you recall, McDonald took a polygraph but the results were never released. If memory serves me correct, I think Kerr went to McDonald before reporting Jaliek missing. Is this odd, I don’t know. I’m not sure what I would do if I were in the same situation. You’re right, so many questions.
