Police source: Szostak drowned accidentally

with 4 comments

ALBANY – A police source tells NewsChannel 13 the cause of Joshua Szostak’s death was accidental drowning.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning on the body found Tuesday in the Hudson River.  The identity of the body has not been officially announced, but the police source says it is Szostak.

The 21-year-old Latham man had been missing from Albany since December. Albany police say personal items found on the body discovered floating in the water in Greene County indicate it is Szostak.

Szostak disappeared sometime after he left the Bayou Cafe in downtown Albany just before Christmas.

Since then, his family and friends have been actively and relentlessly searching for him. They tried retracing his steps, hanging up posters, hiring an investigator — doing everything they could to find the missing man.

There was a search of the Hudson River in January in Albany using sonar technology, nothing was found.

Then, miles away in Coxsackie and months later, a boater found a body in the Hudson River. It was a white male floating freely in the water with some personal belongings. Albany police said Tuesday they believed it was Szostak.

Police are trying to figure out what happened that December night and how he ended up in the water.

  1. How sad. But hopefully the family can take comfort knowing that no one caused him any ill-harm.

  3. Is anyone looking into this link? May want to have someone take it into consideration. THere have been way too many young male college students found in rivers in the last few years!

Do you remember that U of M student that went missing and then they
found him in the river? Then not long after that a St Lawrence
student went missing that they found him in the river. Well, on the
news last night they had a story about how they think it is related.
The full details are not out yet but these two cops think it is a
calculated nation wide plot to kill young males.

  4. Hi Jennifer,

I just posted this link on the topix forum for Joshua and I sent it to the Albany Police. I hope it went to the right place as I do not have a direct email address. It’s something that’s worth looking into.

I will admit, I often figure these college kids get drunk and lose track of where they are, thus ending up in a bad situation. This does not seem to always be the case.
