Families of missing people on emotional roller coaster when bodies are found

with 3 comments

SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. – For the families of missing people in the region, the discovery of a body sends them on an emotional roller coaster ride.

Jaliek Rainwalker’s grandmother Barbara Reeley said, “I feel like I’ve been hit hard in the stomach and then the dread. Oh my gosh, is it Jaliek? It’s someone’s child? I want it to be Jaliek because I want to find him so badly, but then I hope it’s not because it’s so hard to bear.”

Jaliek’s grandmother Barbara even got a call from Bill Szostak Tuesday morning. He was wondering when Texas EquuSearch would be back to use the side-scan sonar in the river. Just a few hours later, he got the call about his own son. Now Barbara, who has relentlessly searched for her grandson for nearly six months, says on a day like this, she could not just sit home and do nothing.

“I just decided to grab my boots, backpack and just look. Look in the woods and in the water.”

She looked for Jaliek in Schuylerville along the Battenkill and says while it would be devastating to find him, the alternative is worse.

“It’s really close to unbearable not to know where my grandchild is.”

Barbara also says there’s little hope left of finding Jaliek alive but there is a reason she can’t move on just let.

“I can’t let it go because he deserves to be laid to rest. Properly and with respect,” she said.

  1. I can’t even begin to imagine what Barbara is going through. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family that in search of Jaliek. I so wish TES would find Jaliek just so his family could have closure. But there is a part of me that hopes he really did just runaway and doesn’t know how to come back home. if that makes sense.
